By now, you may have already decided to proceed with medical school. And so before the school starts, you want an overview of what medical school will be like. A Boston medical student was generous enough to share.
For the academic part, he said they had
6 weeks of anatomy
3 weeks of genetics
4 weeks of clinical epidemiology (also serves as introduction to medical research)
6 weeks of physiology
4 weeks of immunology
5 weeks of microbiology
2 weeks of pathology
6 weeks of biochemistry
There is also Patient- Doctor Relations and Social Medicine (otherwise called Medical Ethics). He added that although some medical schools label Social Medicine/ Medical Ethics as an elective subjects, it is required in his school. He got a sense of idealism in the Social Medicine class. His mentor shared that it takes 17 years for technology to be accepted and widely used--that's quite a log time there. It is even longer in third-world countries. The Social Medicine class taught him how to get over the barriers so that medical technology is adapted faster. To achieve this, they looked into domestics issues.
As for Patient-Doctor Relations, it is a communication skills class where medical students are taught how to ask questions to make patient care better if not good.
Well, that is not all: there are parties, medical society Olympics, dance offs, dodge ball games. In summary, first year is a relatively easy year. So enjoy the time before you get too busy to have a social life during third year medical school.
