NMAT Review: Frequently Asked Questions



Note that although I researched the answers the best I can, you should not, and cannot hold me against what I've written here. These things are merely to give you an idea of information that must always be verified with the proper bodies/organizations.

What is NMAT?
NMAT stand for National Medical Admission Test. It is a mandatory examination for anyone who wants to study medicine in the Philippines. If you are in the US, the examination would be called MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).  According to CEM, "The National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) is designed to determine the scholastic aptitude of those wishing to pursue a medical career. It was developed by the CEM for the Board of Medical Education of the Professional Regulation Commission and has been administering this examination since 1985 with new forms developed yearly. The NMAT is a mandatory test for those who wish to take up medical studies in the Philippines."

When do you take NMAT?
It is administered by the Center for Educational Measurement and the examination is held every December and April. During December, it is held in various places other than Manila. Test venue could include Cebu. NMAT done during April is only held in Manila.


How do I apply  for NMAT?
The application period is usually a month or so before the designated test date. For Manila residents you may check out the CEM office located at 24th Floor Cityland Pasong Tamo Tower, 2210 Chino Roces Ave. Makati City (It is near Don Bosco Makati). For those outside Manila, your may check out the CEM website and click on CEM test centers. There are various CEM test center located around the country, choose Luzon, Visayas or Mindanao. It comes with contact numbers.

How much does it cost to take the NMAT?
As of April 2009, total exam fee and practice set will amount to 1,500 pesos. It comes with  mini-reviewer. Some would say that the reviewer that comes with the application is enough. Others, especially those not of science background, would advise having the MSA NMAT reviewer.

What is the coverage of the NMAT?
According to CEM, "The test is divided into two parts: Part I is a 200-item test battery on verbal, inductive reasoning, quantitative, and perceptual acuity skills administered for 3 hours. Part II is a 2-hour-30-minute test in the basic sciences namely, Biology, Physics, Social Sciences, and Chemistry, consisting also of 200 items."
 
Who is qualified to take the NMAT?
Qualified test takers are graduates and graduating students of degree programs.Those students planning to take UP's INTRAMED are high school graduates.


Can I retake the NMAT?
Yes, you may retake the examinations as many times as you want like when you don't like your score or that you didn't reach the cut-off score of your preferred school.
